Adolescence Isn’t Just Bigger Childhood

Childhood is a time of dependence. Adulthood is a time of responsibility. Adolescence is the bridge between the two. During these years, young people begin asking some of life’s biggest questions:

• Who am I?
• Where do I belong?
• What am I capable of?
• How can I make a meaningful contribution?

Historically, young people grew into adulthood by participating in the work and life of their communities, learning alongside capable adults and gradually taking on greater responsibility. Branches Teen Guild seeks to restore some of these experiences in a modern, relationship-centered setting.

The Guild Model

Rather than functioning like a traditional class, Branches follows the historic guild model. Throughout the year, teens spend time alongside adults who actively practice meaningful crafts, trades, professions, and vocations.

Possible mentors include gardeners, carpenters, artists, photographers, writers, musicians, entrepreneurs, naturalists, mechanics, and many others. Learning happens through observation, participation, conversation, and shared work — not lectures, worksheets, or grades.

Why We Created Branches

We don’t believe teenagers are problems to manage. We believe they are emerging adults looking for meaningful places to belong. Adolescents need more than information. They need trusted adults, meaningful work, opportunities to contribute, and experiences that help them discover who they are becoming. Branches exists to provide that kind of community.
